07/01/10 New York, New York....so good they sent us an invite! An invite to enter a Scottish Police team to New York 7s 2010 has been received from the hosts of the tournament. The invite is open to all who wish to participate or just travel for the fun of watching as spectators. However before any of you get too excited, the trip would be funded from your own pockets. The tournament has several sections to cater for all level of player from Professional to Over 45's. The team (or teams) from Scotland will be entered into the most appropriate category dependent upon the player pool. The tournament has been running for 51 years and has teams entered from across the globe. It is played on state of the art artificial surfaces, so no matter the weather in New York the tournament goes ahead. The itinerary will be to travel from Edinburgh to Newark on 25 Nov 2010 with the tournament being played on the 27th, with some time for sightseeing and returning on the 30th. At the moment the approximate cost is £800pp. This includes return flights, 5 nights accommodation at the Embassy Suites including breakfast and nightly drinks reception at the hotel for 2 hours with all the free booze you can handle. DI Gordon Crossan from Central Scotland Police is the organiser for this tour and he has asked John Shaw to collate the names of all those wishing to attend from Strathclyde. He will be having a planning meeting in January so has asked that all those interested get your names to John by 8th January at the latest . So far we have 15 or so people signed up to travel, so if your serious about going send John your details at his email which can be found in the committee pages of the Players Section.
07/01/10 Updates Well, what a performance by the Strathclyde Select team at the Kilmarnock Indoor Touch Tournament - we've copied Sandy's 'report' from the forum below for you all to enjoy. In the major competition (yes I typed the word 'major' competition) we came within one second of the Final. The opposition equalised with the last move of the semi final game and in 'sudden death' extra time scored again to defeat our valiant representatives (the team that beat us were beaten in the final). This was from a pool of 16 teams. We unfortunately went downhill as soon as Andy the Animal started believing that he was the coach for the team. The guys had won their two games, reaching the semi, were about to win the semi and then Andy started taking an interest and making changes which eventually saw us go under. As ever Andy then wanted to punch his chosen selection of victims ('surprisingly' all were Ayr players who had kindly donned strips for us) who he held responsible for failing to win his first ever trophy. The Rowallan Activity Centre was like a 'seal' colony with the amount of folk present and having to climb over each other to get to a bar. Good day, plenty of drink, lots of old faces and an event which will definately be repeated next year by Kilmarnock RFC. Well done to the guys in attendance from SPRFC - P Lundie, R McAteer , D Adam and W Wong with Hartley and Boab there 'helping' as well as a few other familiar faces (and booming voices).
07/01/10 Norrie's Retiring With more 'comeback gigs' than the Chancers we hear it is now the final curtain call on Norrie's current career. To mark / celebrate the occasion there is going to be a bit of a bash up at Lochinch on Friday 22nd January 2010 for those in that care to claim an acquaintanceship with him.
18/01/10 This Week's News The weather was remarkably kind, even if the scoreline wasn't, as we headed down the long and very winding road to Stranraer last Saturday to take on Wigtownshire in the league. Unfortunately though the pre match hospitality was fantastic our performance on the pitch wasn't with very disjointed play and big gaps being left which a strong Wigtownshire took full advantage of eventually running out the 56 - 0 winners. Match Photos are on line. No MOM yet but the Dick of the Day went to Hartley for managing to bring down the cross bar on the Wigtownshire goals while trying to kick the ball back on to the pitch following a conversion. Thighs of the Week went to a very decorative Tay. Once again thanks to Wigtownshire for some fine hospitality and we look forward to seeing them again in three weeks or so when we take them on in the cup at the beginning of February. Big thanks also to the two drivers of the buses! It's never the most pleasant of jobs but it makes the trips all the more fun for everyone else knowing we are in safe hands on the way there and back!
18/01/10 Next Week's Updates Training continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday at Govan Police station. Meet in the car park at 17:45 to be escorted in. Recent numbers have been encouraging so make sure you head down and join in. The weekend starts off with a bit of a 'social' on Friday night as friends, acquaintances and 'other's join Norrie for his retirement bash at Lochinch. All rugby peeps are welcome to come along and it all kicks off from 5.30pm onwards! On Saturday the 1XV are at Lochinch in the first home game of 2010 as they take on Cumnock in a league match. This is the last of the 2pm kick offs for this season. Please get your availability to Craig ASAP even if it's to confirm you can't play as this reduces the number of follow up calls and texts he needs to make.
24/01/10 This Week's News Despite what threatened to be a very cold start the weather proved to be kind on Saturday giving almost perfect wind free conditions for the match. It was somewhat frustrating to watch the MIB, who struggled for players for this game, fail to turn opportunities into points on the board. In the end it was Cumnock with some speedy break away trys who took the honours with a 20 - 0 win. Again there were encouraging signs for the team (against pre-Christmas performance) but not enough final cohesiveness to make the difference on the scoreline. Thankfully it was also a relatively injury free match for us. Match Photos and the match report are on line. Ross Douglas was the Man of the Match and, always a shock with our team, there was no Dick of the Day nominated. Thighs of the Week went to Westy. From a spectators point of view the amount of support on the touchline for the home team was also disappointing as we were outnumbered by the travelling Cumnock support. All in all, if this was a school report card, it would probably read 'improved but could do much better' for both players and support. Still there are plenty of games left in the season to turn fortunes around and we live ever in hope! Man of the match from last week's Wigtownshire game was Tom Steven and we also now have a match report from last week for anyone who would like to view.
24/01/10 Next Week's Updates Training continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday at Govan Police station. Meet in the car park at 17:45 to be escorted in. Recent numbers have been encouraging so make sure you head down and join in. On Saturday the 1XV are away against Strathendrick at Fintry. Please note this is a 3pm kick off as we are now moving into the 'summer season' timings. Please get your availability to Craig ASAP even if it's to confirm you can't play as this reduces the number of follow up calls and texts he needs to make. You might have noticed that the caption competition has dragged on and on....and this is nothing to do with the quality or quantity of the entries, but rather because we don't have a really good / funny or inspirational photo to use next - drop us an email and send us any pics of the team that you think could be used for our next one and we'll get it up on line tout de suite!
02/02/10 News & Updates Training continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday at Govan Police station. Meet in the car park at 17:45 to be escorted in. Recent numbers have been encouraging so make sure you head down and join in. Last Saturday there was no match against Strathendrick - this has now been moved to Saturday 20th March. This coming Saturday we are away in a Cup match back down to Wigtownshire. Kick off is at 3pm. Please try and be available! And also as always get your availability to Craig ASAP. There is also a new Captain's blog for players in the Players Area.
15/02/10 Team Dancers The ongoing debate about whether or not we have the best team of dancers in rugby has finally been laid to rest by video footage provided by a source, who to protect his (tall, dark haired, left for a while but has recently come back) integrity will remain anonymous. Proof, not only of certain team members skills, but also their enduring sex appeal, can be found here (please be patient it may take a bit to load).
15/02/10 News & Updates Training continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday at Govan Police station. Meet in the car park at 17:45 to be escorted in. Last Saturday there was no match and most folks were at the internationals (or in the pub watching). This coming Saturday we have a home game against Oban. Kick off is at 3pm. Please try and be available! As always get your availability to Craig ASAP.
15/02/10 Scandanavian Pillagers If you'd like to remember what the team looked like BEFORE the tour kicked off proper - then you can catch them in all their Viking glory in the Team Stuff area in the galleries. From what we hear everyone survived the tour....well mostly....!
20/02/10 News & Updates This Saturday's match (20/02) against Oban Lorne was called off due to ground conditions - not the only casualty across the fixtures unfortunately. Training continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday at Govan Police station. Meet in the car park at 17:45 to be escorted in. This coming Saturday we have an away game against Paisley. Kick off is at 3pm. Please try and be available! As always let Craig know ASAP.
25/02/10 News & Updates It will be no surprise to anyone who has looked out the window in the last few days that this Saturday's match (27/02) against Pailsey has been called off due to the weather conditions. Training continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday at Govan Police station. Meet in the car park at 17:45 to be escorted in. Our next scheduled match, if the weather relents, is the fixture postponed from last year against Carrick. It's an away game with a 3pm kick off. As always Craig would appreciate a prompt response to calls and texts about availability, so please let him know ASAP.
26/02/10 Fixture Additions All known fixtures up to the end of April are now in the calendar. There will of course, after the last two weeks cancellations, be more fixtures added at some point in the next few weeks - taking us out into May before the season ends.
07/03/10 Last Weeks Updates Finally after six weeks of cancelled and postponed matches the team finally made it on to the pitch in a league game against Carrick down the road in Maybole. A much improved performance still left the team losing 20 points to 10 on the day but if any of the number of tries deemed to be 'held up' by the referee had been counted the score line might have looked very different. We wish a very speedy recovery to the Carrick player who was taken off with a nasty shoulder injury and with luck our own Gary T will have managed to heal up yet another facial injury before next week. A big thank you and well done to all those who showed up and played for the team on the day. A match report and match photos are on line courtesy of Hartley and Bob. There are no awards as yet.
07/03/10 Next Week's News Training continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday at Govan Police station. Meet in the car park at 17:45 to be escorted in. The faithful regulars continue to show up week on week for training but there are MANY faces missing. Even on training session a week will make a difference to your fitness and to the performance of the team on the park so please do everything you can to ensure that you attend! Our next scheduled match is a new fixture following the rearranged calendar. We are now due to play Paisley, away, at 3pm on the 13th March. There is some talk about trying to change the time to accommodate the internationals so please keep your eyes peeled for news from Craig. As always Craig would appreciate a prompt response to calls and texts about availability, so please let him know ASAP or for a pleasant change why not shock the sh*t out of him by letting him know before he has to ask!
07/03/10 David Azhar Quiz Night There is a quiz night taking place on Friday 19th March in aid of the David Azhar Appeal. With prizes of £100 to the winners and 2nd & 3rd place cash prizes. There are 18 teams already entered at £10 a team (teams of 4). It's a 7pm meet for a 7.30 start. You'll be delighted to know that Flowers is not the Quiz master (for those that were tortured by the difficulty of the questions and the incomprehensible nature of their delivery last time), that honour is going to Mr Russell McLachlan who will also be the DJ on the night. Price includes a Pie and there will be a raffle as well. Sandy is looking for at least 2 teams from the Polis Rugby to make up the full house. Please pop your names up on the forum if you either have a team or want to be part of one and make every effort to support the appeal and have some fun at the same time. David's website has recently had a revamp and you can keep up with the happenings for the appeal at www.davidazhar.com. David also has his own blog which he updates regularly with this thoughts and activities so please take a moment to check it out.
07/03/10 Craig's Pain...and some money for Haiti Club captain Craig is stripping off his manly rug of leg hair today, from the knee down, in charity leg wax. A guy in his work is aiming to get 100 guys to do this, raising at least £100 each in sponsorship, to raise a total of £10k. It's going towards the Haiti appeal, but specifically to one area that provides meals to children. http://www.marysmeals.org If you fancy sponsoring him you can either post on the forum or send him a text letting him know the amount you want to donate. Or alternatively, if you think you could raise the £100 yourself, let him know and he will sort you out with all the details, sponsor sheets etc. This is an ongoing thing through the year, not just for this Sunday, and waxing will be organised in batches of 10 or so guys as they each reach £100 in pledges of sponsorship.
